This is a very strange and haunting story with much to recommend it. It is a ghost/love story with considerable charm and starts off really well but then wanders around a bit before getting back on track. I liked the story very much but found the narrative style to be annoying after while. Also, the book is in serious need of editing. There are a lot of misused words (it is "past", not "passed" - a mistake made repeatedly - and the author needs to learn the difference between "effect" and "affect".) I try not to be overly critical of proofing errors but some of these were repeated so often they were not proofing errors, they were misuse of language. The author has a good story to tell but he needs someone to give it a good, thorough proofing/editing.

This was a treat. One of the things that will draw you into this story is the eloguently crafted prose of the early chapters. It is rare that an author goes to this amount of trouble with wordsmithing.

The first part of the story centers around the disappearance and presumed murder of two young lovers early in the last century. Then flash forward seventy-five years into the future where two young people remodeling a famous family photographic portrait studio, discover that it is haunted by these two and a malignant spirit believed to be their murderer. A mystery then unfolds as Evan (the suitor to Shelley) tries to prevent her obession with the studio and apparant possession by Caraliza, from harming her. In this effort Evan is savagely attacked and almost killed trying to save Shelley. Romance, sexual attraction and possession, and ultimately shame, are all interwoven as this tale unfolds.

The research that went into descrbing photography of a 100 or so years ago is evident and lends a lot of authenticity to the period writing.

One of the things that makes this story so compelling is its intricate plotting. It has many layers as Evan and Shelley grapple with the haunted studio, Evans injuries and the reaction of their families, and everyone's concern for Shelley as she becomes more and more drawn into the spirits haunting the studio.

The writing is a little uneven. The first part where the romance between Yuesep and Caraliza is developing reminds me of Caleb Carr and the prose is beautiful and lyrical. Deeper into the story some of the verbiage is a little disjointed and suffers by comparision to the first chapters.

None-the-less. This is an unusual book of romance, intrigue, haunting and possession. It will draw you in with excellent characterization and plotting. An easy five star story.
Caraliza was a beautiful tale. I really enjoyed the plot and I was completely surprised with the ending. The story was compelling and kept me page-turning until I read the very end. The characters were full bodied and endearing. The only oddity to me was the writing style itself. Sometimes the wording was jilting and repetitive, but it didn't distract from the actual book. I caught a few errors, but in and of itself, Caraliza was a good novel. I think the author should work on developing a more natural writing voice though.
This book has lingered on my since March 2012. I kept adding books to it, and this one kept getting pushed back.

Now I wish I hadn't waited so long. I did not go back to read the description again so when the story jumped from Yousep to Caraliza, I didn't know what to expect. While there are some minor grammatical errors, it was easy to look past and get deep into the story. I was in tears at some points, especially the last chapters.

I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good drama, ghost story and most importantly, a romance that lasts for decades, to the grave and back.
This was an unexpected surprise. The first quarter of the book was fantastic and the end really wrapped things up. The middle was more or less very good but a lot could have been omitted. I expected a different story from the way the story began and then it took me on an unexpected journey. The characters were well written but I am still unsure of the main character 'Shelly'. She seemed at times a bit disturbing to not need more medical help) Also, there was way too much 'ghosting' in the closet...you will know what I mean. Really? Two grown people in love with each other taking turns with ghosts? It became a bit too much and the story was a bit silly at some points. The end was very surprising though. Who would have thought? Either way, it was a very good read with lots of twists and turns...sometimes too many that it made my head spin, but still worth it.
