I suspected after the first book that they were going to make Mia's husband's accident not so much of an accident, and this book centers around just that.

Charlie, Mia's detective friend and colleague, reopens Mia's husband's accident on his own and begins investigating what really happened. Again, many of the elements that I liked from the first books are there; I enjoy being in Mia's head, and seeing the interlocking of politics at her workplace and the gray area of guilt and innocence in her side-case was captivating. The mystery aspect was still pretty decent; while her side case was pretty straightforward - as opposed to the previous book where it ended in a bit of a twist - it was just as captivating, with the mystery being less of who did what and more of why.

Now the disappointments... We once again get to spend some time in Charlie's head, but I still feel like I barely know him. he seems very one dimensional, especially since his parts go up against Mia's, who is a very bright and complex character. Charlie just seems to fall flat in many aspects. Another thing I wasn't fond of is the introduction of a few POV chapters from a hitman/thug's perspective, who right at the beginning states he caused Scott's accident and how he did it. I really feel like that worked against the mystery. We didn't get enough of his perspective to really flesh him out, so it feels like that was the only way the author could find to fit in an explanation of what exactly happened to Scott that night. I feel like if his perspectives had been crapped, and she had found a way to write in the discovery of this information by the characters - perhaps by finding the hitman's home and items in there to draw conclusions from, or something - this would have helped a lot, and we could have also spent more time in Charlie's head learning about him.

One other minor thing that bugged me was that a dead end from the investigation of Scott's accident is left dangling a bit at the end. I believe from reading the description of the third book that it's meant to be picked up there, but that's not really adequately implied in this book, so it just feels like a dropped ball at the end.

Great book!!! Ms Wiehl as always does a job. She has a knack for blending plot, characters, and a good story line. I have read all of her books and always look forward to the next one!!
The novel is an emotionally charged legal mystery It involves adolescent behaviors and adult reactions. Medical and courtroom conditions are clearly explained in fascinating fashion. Also can your spouse be trusted? Stresses are described in exemplary fashion and is well worth reading. Romantic choice is likely part of a sequel that this reviewer eagerly awaits.
Kept my interest. Very good plot. Had to keep reading because my imagination could not figure it out. Definitely recommend!
Entertaining ...Thought provoking ... a great author to recommend to my husband first then friends....She included twists and multiple story lines that kept me engrossed but not confused. Thank you for sharing your talents. A book to return to in years to come
The second book in this series was still a page turner but seemed to lack some believability throughout the story. The ending in particular felt too contrived and abrupt. But, all in all, still a good mystery!
I believe this is the second Mia Quinn novel written by Lis Wiehl and they keep getting better. Mia is a single Mom with a teenaged son and young daughter. Her husband was killed in a car accident due to drunk driving - or was he murdered? This is a real page-turner. There are two murder investigations going on in this book along with glimpses of her private life and the rough time she's having juggling motherhood and a job. When it came to the end, I couldn't put this book down. Will she make it or won't she? I'm not giving away the ending but you will surely find that, like mine, your heart is pounding until the end of the book. I can't wait until Lis comes out with another.
Charlie Carlson is working a new case with Mia – three teenagers threw down a shopping cart from an overhead railing and it hit a lady, putting her in the hospital . Mia was assigned to prosecute for the state, Charlie heads the investigation as a homicide detective , as they tried to decide whether to charge the 15 year olds as adults . Meanwhile, Charlie began looking at the records surrounding Mia's husband , Scott's motor vehicle accident and death. He's convinced that it was no accident. Mia finds old accounting records of Scott's - formerly a CPA- and began questioning the tax returns of the jewelry store and the restaurant . Their investigation will lead to more than what Mia had anticipated and slow recognition that Scott and her marriage was not the most ideal. Eli remains in the picture as he is assigned as public defender for the teenage boys. I look forward to continuing to follow Mia Quinn. This was a nail biter to the end!
